FREEDOM MEALS 2025
On 5 May, we sit down with all the Kingdom of the Netherlands to share stories and celebrate freedom together. We will join a Freedom Meal with acquaintances & strangers and find each other in the stories we share. Sharing our symbolic freedom soup brings us closer to each other's worlds.
The soup is prepared by a different Dutch chef each year, sharing the chef's personal story and recipe. Whatever country you are in, everyone gets a bowl. Soup is universal, it is simple to prepare and easy to share.
In the Netherlands and on our islands we can celebrate that we live in freedom. But freedom is never self-evident. Not in our Kingdom - Not in the rest of the world. Only if we really keep meeting each other. And if we do that with many, freedom can continue to exist. That is why we will sit down together at the table throughout the Kingdom on May 5, 2025 to share stories and celebrate freedom together. You just have to join us.

The war was tangible and noticeable on the Dutch Caribbean islands
On 4 May, we reflect on the battles that were fought, including here on our islands. The refineries in Aruba and Curaçao played a major role in this. During the oil transports to the Allies, 276 of our people lost their lives as a result of shelling of the ships by the Germans.
On the islands themselves, the blackout was in effect. People then had to live in darkness for the five years of the war. We are proud that eyewitnesses from that time are sharing their stories.
